Front Cover

This is my front cover.. from my to be published magazine I believe it portrays many connotations from a typical music magazine. Evaluation to follow.

Photos from Photoshoot.

Evaluated in my Evaluation.

Scans and photos.

I created simple and easy to read scans to get the point together on how I was planning to put my magazine together.

Following will be a handful of photos from my photoshoot. I have evaluated this fully in my evaluation, however I will post some of my favourites from the shoot which I took hundreds of Photos.

My Actors were two college students Daniel Northcott and Peter Bassett who I believe perfectly acted out:
Boy George
50 Cent
Tinie Tempah
Elton John
Michael Jackson
Without them my job would of been alot harder so many thanks.

Survey Analysis.

Question 1:

Most people who answered the questionairre were 17 years old. I found that using this evidence the magazine should be aimed at young adults, as it would appeal to them in the easiest way, and would find it fun and interesting to read.

Question 2:

Out of the people surveyed, they decided that the main genre for my magazine would be hip hop and RnB as this is a popular type of music for young adults, and I believe it can boost my sales.

Question 3:

I chose the price for my magazine to be £3. This was the majority price chosen in my survey. I also analysed many music magazines and a £3 price seemed very reasonable for my created magazine.

Question 4:

My audience surveyed decided that a mixture of both would be most suitable as it would appeal to the eye of all of my customers and all together would boost my sales.

Question 5:

A comedy music magazine would be something different and my audience surveyed decided that this would be a great idea. However I decided to only add a few comedy articles as too much would not be interesting for the reader.

Question 6:

It was decided that the magazine would be called 'It's Like That' I then added the slogan as 'and that's the way it is' this was decided by nearly all of the people who took the questionairre and I believe it sticks out to the readers eye.

Overall I belive this survey helped me with many ideas for the creation of my magazine.

Survey.

I decided that the best way to help decide my main piece was to create a survey. With this I would have many ideas from students who would be interested in my music magazine. These questions would be analysed as I also posted it onto Facebook for my friends to answer.

Double Page Spreads:
Q and NME

I found for Q using something a little bit like I had planned for my double page would be an appropriate feature to analyse and get more detailed ideas for my final piece.

On one page is an image of Chris Packham listening to music in a forest, and on the other page is each up and coming album that he has reviewed. The heading sticks out on the left hand page, as it is Bold and has a red border over it.

On the other page I find the layout created very well as it is layered with two block of four which makes it alot easier for the reader to read, also they can tell which artist/band it is about as it is shown with a red header which sticks out and an image above it.

Double Page Spreads

Q and NME

Contents Page :

Q's contents page is well presented over a double page, this gives the reader the oppurtunity to see every content inside the magazine. It uses big images to show reader there is much more to come, also it again keeps to 3 main colours ( RED WHITE BLACK ).

However I believe that NME's contents page is very poor, it is pushed into a corner of the 3rd page and all its shows is each artist or band featured in alphabetical order, along with the page number they are on. I believe if NME followed Q's suit of keeping it well publiced about what is to feature, they would grasp many more readers.

Font:

In Both magazines the colours used are very similar of the ones used of the front cover this is a continuing theme throughout the magazine. The same applies to the fonts. However I believe that this is very hard to read for NME and this effort really would struggle long sighted readers.

Masthead:

This I believe is not applicable for NME. However for Q it is dominated by big images which capture the readers eye, I believe without this the contents page would be egnore, but with these images it grasps their attention.

Q and NME
Front cover-

Image: There is only one image placed on the front cover, which is a picture of Cheryl Cole, this is used to drag the audience in, as Cheryl Cole is a world wide known sex symbol. Males want her and Females want to be her.
This is very different from my other magazine NME. This is dominated again by one image, however there is a tiny image placed in the masthead. The My Chemical Romance image is not used as a Sex symbol, but as the report is about their comeback it gives more of a "We are back and we mean business" look about it.

Font: Many differnt fonts and styles are used on the front cover, the main heading is well portrayed and has many meanings.
3 Words... is the name of her album
Cheryl Cole... her name and who is being interviewed
R O C K S... this says that she is cool and fun to interview but also Q is mainly a rock magazine so saying that she Rocks meant she suits the style of the magazine.

The title is Bold which sticks out to the readers eye, this is a very famous brand name, so when people see it, it will always attract their eye towards it.

For NME it follows the same suit, like Q there are 3 main colours used ( RED WHITE BLACK). With Q being RED WHITE GREY, all headings are used with block capitals which makes it stand out to the reader, with all sub-headings in a more traditional written form.

Masthead: For Q it is totally dominated by one person, Cheryl Cole, everything else seems to fall around her. This works perfectly for the magazine as she is meant to dominate and she most certainly does!

NME is slightly different because the way that the My Chemical Romance Picture is featured, it is trying to be pushed to the back and out of the way, so I believe that even though it is the main part of the front cover, all headings around it are being made to be stick out more to the reader.

On with the big one...

My prelim task was now finished and I was ready to move onto the main task, this started with analysing two music magazines which I chose Q and NME. Following will be details of the mags and then the analysis of the front covers, contents pages and a double page feature article.

Thursday, 1 April 2010

Front Cover fully analysed.

When the front cover was finished, I analysed it to find many mistakes. However, I found this as a positive because I knew when that when I came to my main piece, I knew what I needed to work on.

I realised that there was a white margin around the piece, I realised that this could be taken away but it was a silly mistake to make as I should of made the magazine a full page cover without any margin being noticed.

My 3 main colours were Blue Black and white.

There is no puff on the cover, which is useually found on most magazines.

Also there is no date or barcode, which is a must or the magazine won't even be correct at all.

It could also be argued that the masthead doesn't stand out very clearly, as it is hidden in the shade of the roofing.

I was very Critical of this piece but I believe that this will help me realise my mistakes when I come to make the final piece.

Magazine briefly analysed

The Final Piece

Almost finsihed..

getting there...

Early stages

Prelim

Finally my prelim task was coming together, and I started to create my front cover, over the next few posts I will show you how I put the front cover together.

Flat Plan

Next is my flat plan for the magazine, I belive that it is very simple however I didn't want to make this magazine with too much information on it.

Questionnaire Analysis

Question 1 -
The students polled said that the school logo is a suitable title for the college magazine. This made it easy when creating the front cover and allowed me to produce something, which was unique for the school.

Question 2-
Surprisingly the students said that they would pay £1 if a price was given to the magazine. I believe that students, parents and guardians should be given given their news about the college for free.

Question 3-
Only just did the students agree that the magazine was the best way to hand out the news. However I believe that with the right news and information it would become a big hit.

Question 4-
The students were undecided in deciding if pictures were appropriate as the only thing to fill the front cover. This gave me the idea to mix it up with stories and pictures.

Question 5-
The students agreed that the front cover was suitable for all ages. However the headline "Does it really look good to have your underwear on show?" could be deemed as unsuitable for a college which teaches children from the ages of 11+

Questionnaire

Survey.

As this was part of the prelimary task, I decided to experiment with the school magazine cover. However I firstly conducted a short questionnaire to help me have a more clear understanding of what I wanted to create. Following is my survey.

evaluation continued

My Evaluation of photos.

Last 3 images.

First 3 Images

Picture ideas for my created school magazine

I chose to take my photos in our newly developed 6th form common room, I found this suitable as it was a hot topic being talked about around the college and I believed that this would grab the most attention for students, parents and anyone interested in the college. I will next post the 6 images which i found best.

Analysis of Bodmin College Magazine

Wednesday, 10 March 2010

Next I had to analyse a School Magazine front cover, this i found a bit harder as the Bodmin College Magazine was something which didn't cover much information, and i found myself talking about more negatives than positives.

Peace out

DC

PowerPoint 1 NOW Magazine.

Pre Production Task

For our pre production task, we had to create 3 powerpoint presentations which analyse 3 magazine covers.
I chose to do OK!, NOW and FHM. These i believe were a wide range of magazine choices in which I could look at the many features, i found this exercise very easy, as I could use features learnt from GCSE Media Studies to apply to the powerpoint still using as much media language as possible.
Below I will post my 3 powerpoints.

Many Thanks
